First of all, any teacher that doesn't know how to use a certain technology shouldn't shy away from taking the time out to learn it! What happened to us teachers being lifelong learners? In my opinion, keeping up to date on the technology out in the world fits into that category. Secondly, children today are way more equipped in using technology than back in the days we were growing up. Technology isn't made to be difficult. It doesn't take long to explain or show how to use a certain software. Many people are hands-on learners and once they get into the groove and start experimenting with something they can figure out the uses of it.
Before I started writing this, I was reading my classmates blogs. Lisa's especially hit home for me. Children LOVE incorporating technology! Not only is it fun, but being able to create something through use of technology requires the child to use a higher order of thinking. Please don't just give your students a textbook and a pencil. Allow them to use other methods such as computers, videos, recorders, and software to compose messages or papers. Not only does it allow for a certain unique creativeness from the student, but it is more engaging. As teachers, we want our students to be engaged in the lessons as much as possible. Therefore, follow up on the technology being offered and dive feet first in learning how to use it so you can integrate that technology into your lessons.
