- How are ways we can promote critical literacy in our students?
There are learning strategies we can use to help our students learn in a content area. We just have to reflect back on what worked well for us as students and find ways to tweak it for our students' learning needs.
- How can we better implement our practice to help our students with special needs meet the expectations of NCLB?
I think that in order for students to function successfully with critical literacy, teachers need to focus on developing students' critical thinking and transferable learning abilities. As teachers, one of the ways that we can promote critical literacy is by using children's literature in combination with other materials to introduce critical conversations and social action projects in the classrooms. We should ask engaging and thought-provoking questions, and allow the students to be creative with their responses and interactions. We should also provoke conversations to develop students' power to use language as an aid to thinking.
ReplyDeleteAydra, I completely agree with including children's literature and other materials in the classroom. Not only is that a wonderful way to introduce "critical conversations and social action projects", but it is also a great way to intergrate multiculturalism along with motivating the students to want to learn more. Having that motivation from students and knowing what their intersts are is a great way to conform instruction to "meet academic demands".
