Conley says one of the principles is, "Ongoing summative assessment of students and programs, which is more formal and provides data that are reported for accountabilitiy and research purposes."
Therefore, Conley suggests that assessment should be happening all the time. Which, I too believe is very important in order to see if the instructional material you are teaching is reaching home with the students. You want to assess them and make sure they have a good understanding of the instructional content, and if they do not you can adapt and adjust your instructional planning and therefore determine if reteaching needs to occur. By using formal assessments you can review them to see if the school or particular students may need intervention.
